The power goes out on a quiet weeknight. It's just the two of you, the house is starting to cool, and the first question is the one it always is: where did we put the flashlight?

That kind of outage isn't dramatic. It's inconvenient, and it can last longer than you'd expect.

The DimDuo is a blackout emergency kit for two, packed in a cooler bag with each group of supplies sealed in its own waterproof bag. It brings light, a weather radio, warmth for two, and first aid, all in one place.

Why the DimDuo is a good fit:

A radio that covers the weather too. A 4-in-1 emergency radio and flashlight with AM/FM, the NOAA Weather Band, and solar charging, so you don't need to keep replacement batteries on hand. When the outage comes with a storm, you can listen to weather broadcasts directly.

A light for each of you. The radio has a built-in flashlight, and a second hand-rechargeable flashlight means you each have your own. An emergency candle, a box of waterproof matches, and an emergency bright stick round out the light.

Warmth for two. Two emergency survival sleeping bags and two body warmers, one of each per person. That's the duo part.

First aid for minor cuts. A bandage first aid kit for the small cuts and scrapes that happen when the house is dark and people are moving around it.

Something to do. A deck of 52 survival playing cards, each illustrating a survival skill. Two people, one deck, and a long evening. Somebody deals.

What it doesn't cover. There's no food, no water, and no way to treat water. This kit covers light, warmth, information, and first aid. Ready.gov, FEMA's preparedness campaign, recommends one gallon of water per person per day, which is six gallons for two people over three days. Keep food and water at home alongside it, or pair it with the SideBySide, a 72-hour kit with food, water pouches, and a way to treat more.

The DimDuo is hand-assembled in the USA. It was designed with advice from emergency preparedness experts and follows guidelines from government agencies and nonprofit preparedness organizations.

Every kit we sell sends $1 to the National Forest Foundation, and the DimDuo is no exception.

Light and warmth for two, packed and ready for whenever the power decides to take the night off.

Who This Kit Is For

This kit is for two-person households that want to be ready for the outages that show up in ordinary years: couples, roommates, empty nesters, and anyone sharing a first place.

It suits households that already keep food and water on hand and need the other half. That means light, warmth, a weather radio, and first aid, organized in one bag instead of scattered across the junk drawer.

It also works well as a second kit for a different floor, or for a parent's home.

Choosing the right number

  • One or two people: one DimDuo covers you, with a sleeping bag and body warmer for each person.
  • Three or more: one DimDuo plus an emergency sleeping bag and body warmer for each additional person.

Scenarios This Kit Covers

  • Power outages. This is the core use. Two flashlights, a candle, and a bright stick spread light through the house, and the radio keeps you informed when the network is down.
  • Winter storms. Two emergency sleeping bags and two body warmers help in a house losing heat. Never use a gas stove or oven to heat your home.
  • Severe weather. The NOAA Weather Band lets you listen to weather broadcasts directly while a storm passes.
  • Evacuation, partially. Everything packs into one bag and goes with you. With no food or water, though, this kit supplements a 72-hour kit rather than replacing one.

Pro Tips

Make It Yours!

Not included: food, water, water treatment, or burn care supplies.

Consider adding:

  • Water. Ready.gov, FEMA's preparedness campaign, recommends one gallon per person per day. For two people over three days, that's six gallons.
  • Food that needs no cooking.
  • Medications. The American Red Cross recommends a seven-day supply, along with any medical items you rely on.
  • A phone charger and backup battery.
  • Glasses, contact lens supplies, and hearing aid batteries for anyone who uses them.

Tips:

  • Test everything when it arrives. Charge both flashlights, tune the radio, and find your local NOAA weather station so you know where it is on the dial.
  • Give the radio some sun. Solar charging works best when the panel sees daylight. A sunny windowsill for an afternoon now and then keeps it ready.
  • Check it twice a year. Pair the check with the spring and fall clock changes, and you won't have to remember a date.
  • Use the flashlights first and the candle second. If you do light the candle, set it on a plate or holder away from anything a pet could knock over. Never leave it burning unattended.
  • Know what the first aid kit covers. It's built for minor cuts. It has no burn supplies, so a tube of burn gel is an inexpensive addition.
  • Keep it where you can reach it in the dark. A hall closet, a bedroom closet, or the top of the basement stairs all work well.

Size & Storage

The DimDuo comes in a cooler bag that fits on a hall closet shelf, a coat closet floor, or under a bed. Indoors is best. A parked car or an unheated garage runs hot in summer and cold in winter, which is hard on batteries and first aid supplies.

Good to Know...

What's the difference between an AM/FM radio and a NOAA weather radio?

An AM/FM radio depends on local stations to share weather news, and they may be covering other stories. NOAA Weather Radio is a nationwide network of stations that broadcast weather information around the clock, straight from the National Weather Service.

The DimDuo's radio includes the NOAA Weather Band, so you can tune in to those broadcasts directly. It isn't listed with an automatic alert feature, so plan on turning it on and listening rather than waiting for it to sound off. Do you know which NOAA station covers your area?
