How Much Water Does My Family Actually Need in an Emergency?
Water is the most critical item in any emergency kit and it's the one most families underestimate. The general rule is simple, but once you factor in your whole household it adds up faster than you'd expect.
The basic guideline:
One gallon of water per person, per day. That covers drinking and basic sanitation. For a family of four that's four gallons a day, and for a 72-hour kit, a minimum of 12 gallons total.
Adjust up if any of these apply:
- Hot climate or summer emergencies as heat increases hydration needs significantly
- Physical activity: if you're evacuating on foot or doing manual work
- Young children: they may need more depending on age and activity level
- Nursing mothers: hydration needs increase substantially
- Pets: dogs and cats need water too; plan at least one extra quart per pet per day
- Anyone with a medical condition: check with your doctor for specific guidance
What about a 2-week supply?
For 14 days, a family of four needs a minimum of 56 gallons. That's a significant amount to store, so many families keep a 72-hour portable supply ready to go and store larger quantities separately at home in food-grade water containers.
Storage tips:
- Use sealed, food-grade containers only
- Store away from direct sunlight and heat
- Replace stored water every 6 to 12 months
- Never store water containers near gasoline, pesticides, or cleaning products, water can absorb fumes through plastic
One thing to remember:
In many emergencies, tap water becomes unavailable or unsafe with little warning. Having your own supply means your family isn't scrambling when it counts most.
