That gap is why supplies need to be ready before you leave, not gathered on the way out.

What should a pet emergency kit include?

• Food and water for 72 hours, plus bowls.
• A leash or carrier your pet will actually enter.
• Comfort items. A familiar toy or blanket does real work on a stressed animal.
• Basic first aid sized for a small animal.

This is where families get caught. Shelters that do accept animals typically require proof of licensing and vaccination, and often expect you to bring a crate and food.

• Current vaccination and licensing records, printed.
• Any ongoing medication, with dosing written down.
• A recent photo of you with your pet, which proves ownership if you're separated.
