  • Food. Ready.gov recommends several days' supply for each pet. Add your cat's regular food.
  • Water. Several days' supply, on top of what your household needs.

  • A current photo of you with your cat, in case you're separated.

Cats react to emergencies very differently than dogs. They tend to hide, go silent, and resist handling when stressed, which makes them harder to locate and move quickly.

Before an emergency happens, practice getting your cat into a carrier calmly and regularly so it isn't a battle when time is short. Some pet-friendly shelters require a carrier or crate for each pet, and the American Red Cross recommends having one ready to get your pet to a shelter, so it's worth having one packed.

How many days of supplies does a cat need?

Ready.gov, FEMA's preparedness campaign, recommends packing several days' supply of food and water for each pet. The CDC's pet checklist goes further and calls for two weeks of food and water per animal. Keep copies of your cat's vaccination records in a waterproof bag with the kit, too.
