What to Do When Your Kit Arrives
Your Gear Up Kit has arrived, welcome to being ready. Here's how to make the most of it, right from the moment you open the box.
1. Unbox and Inventory
Lay everything out on a table or clean floor space. Use the included packing list to confirm every item is there. This is also the perfect time to snap a photo of your kit contents, future you will thank present you if you ever need to check what's inside without digging through the bag.
2. Check Expiration Dates
Several items in your kit such as water pouches, food bars, and any medical supplies may have expiration dates printed on the packaging. Jot these down somewhere easy to find (a note on your phone works great) so you know when it's time to rotate supplies.
3. Personalize Your Kit
Every household is different. Consider adding:
- A copy of important documents (insurance info, ID copies, emergency contacts)
- Any prescription medications your family needs
- Comfort items for kids or pets
- Cash in small bills
- Phone chargers, etc.
4. Learn Before You Need To
Don't wait for an emergency to figure out how your gear works. Take 15 minutes this week to:
- Test the flashlight and check the batteries
- Review the instructions for any water filtration or fire-starting tools
- Read through any included first-aid guidance
5. Store It Somewhere Accessible
Your kit should live somewhere every household member can find it quickly such as a hall closet, mudroom, or entryway works well. Avoid basements or attics that could be hard to reach in certain emergencies.
6. Set a Reminder to Check In
Mark your calendar for a 6-month check-in. Use it to:
- Replace any expired food or water
- Swap batteries
- Update documents or contact info
- Adjust for any changes in your household (new baby, new pet, etc.)
