Where Is the Best Place to Store a Home Emergency Survival Kit?
You've got your kit, now where does it actually go? Location matters more than most people realize. A kit that's hard to reach or poorly stored can lose supplies to heat, moisture, or damage before you ever need it.
The best storage spots in your home:
- A hallway or interior closet is the most popular choice for good reason. It's central, easy to access, and protected from outdoor temperature swings. Avoid closets on exterior walls in climates with extreme heat or cold.
- A basement or lower level works well for larger kits or 2-week supplies. Just make sure the area stays dry. Moisture is the enemy of long-term food and supply storage. Use a waterproof container or sealed bins if flooding is any risk in your area.
- A garage is convenient but can be problematic. Extreme heat in summer can shorten the shelf life of food, water, and medications. If your garage is climate-controlled, it works fine. If not, avoid it for anything temperature-sensitive.
What to avoid:
- Attics: temperatures are too extreme in most climates
- Under a sink: too much moisture risk
- Anywhere hard to reach quickly in the dark
One simple rule: Store your kit somewhere every adult in your household can find and reach within two minutes, without thinking about it.
