Pro Tips

These kits cover the foundation: food, water, light, and power. But seniors have additional needs that no standard kit can anticipate. Use the free Senior Emergency Planning Worksheet to document and plan for the specifics below.

Prescriptions: maintain at least a 7-day supply of all medications and rotate them regularly. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about emergency prescription protocols in your area.

Hearing aid batteries: pack a full set of backup batteries in the kit right now. Hearing aid batteries are small, easy to forget, and absolutely critical for communication during an emergency.

Glasses and contacts: include a backup pair of glasses or a supply of contacts and solution. Vision impairment during an evacuation is a serious safety risk.

CPAP and medical devices: the Power Outage Premium Kit provides backup power support, but confirm your specific device's power requirements and plan accordingly. Know how long your backup power will last.

Medical alert device: ensure your device is charged and that your monitoring service has your updated emergency contact information.

Important documents: store copies of insurance cards, Medicare or Medicaid information, advance directives, and emergency contacts in a waterproof sleeve inside the kit. Adult children should have copies too.

If you are buying this bundle for a parent or grandparent, sit down with them and walk through both kits together. Familiarity with the contents matters as much as having them.

Good to Know...

Older adults face disproportionate risk during emergencies. According to FEMA, seniors account for a significant majority of disaster-related deaths in the United States, not because emergencies affect them more frequently, but because the consequences of being unprepared are more severe. During the 2003 European heat wave, adults over 75 accounted for the vast majority of the estimated 70,000 deaths. During Hurricane Katrina, roughly 71% of Louisiana's storm-related fatalities were adults over the age of 60. The most common factors were living alone, dependence on medical equipment, and lack of a prepared emergency plan. A dedicated set of home emergency survival kits tailored to a senior's specific needs is one of the most practical steps a family can take and one of the most overlooked.
