When should I get a hurricane kit?

Before the season, not during it. Once a storm is named and tracking toward your area, the useful supplies go quickly, and you're making decisions in a crowded store. A kit bought in April is a decision you don't have to make in September.

Is 72 hours enough for a hurricane?

Ready.gov, FEMA's preparedness campaign, recommends at least 72 hours of supplies per household member. For hurricanes, plan on longer. Power and water restoration after a major storm can run well past three days, especially outside urban centers. The StormShield is your foundation, not your whole plan. Why does the bucket matter?

Because sanitation gets serious fast. The 5-gallon bucket doubles as an emergency toilet with the included seat, liners, and Eco Gel. After a major hurricane, sewage systems can be compromised for days, and having a plan for that is one of the least discussed and most useful parts of a kit.

How much water can the tablets treat?

Each Aquatab treats about two quarts of clear water. The 2-person kit includes 30 tablets, roughly 15 gallons. The 4-person kit includes 60, roughly 30 gallons. That's well beyond the ready-to-drink pouches, and it's the part of the kit that matters most once tap water isn't safe.

Two limits worth knowing. The tablets are rated for clear water, so anything cloudy or sediment-heavy should be filtered through a clean cloth first. And they handle biological contamination, not chemical. Floodwater after a hurricane can carry fuel and runoff, which no tablet addresses. Store clean water alongside the kit and treat the tablets as your backup, not your plan.
