Product Highlights

  • Compact, lightweight children's survival kit weighing under 3 lbs.
  • Mini Survival Mate is designed by parents for kids
  • Kid-friendly food, water, weather protection, a flashlight, and a whistle, all neatly packed in a durable nylon bag easy enough for little hands

A kit that lives in your child's school backpack is a kit that's with them.

The Mini Mate is a compact kit built for kids: light enough to carry without thinking about it, simple enough to use without help, and small enough that it actually stays where you put it.

Under 3 pounds in a 9 by 8 by 2 inch nylon bag, it slips into a school backpack, a family emergency bin, or your own bag without taking up meaningful space. Assembled by a kit specialist building emergency kits since 2007.

What's inside. Kid-appropriate food and water rations, an emergency reflective blanket and a poncho for weather protection, hand warmers, a compact flashlight, a signal whistle, and children's bandages for minor scrapes.

Where it fits. The Mini Mate works on its own for younger children, or alongside your family kit so each child has their own supplies without duplicating what you already have. If you want a kit a child carries and manages themselves, the Junior ReadyPack is the fuller version.

Ten minutes when it arrives. Open it together. Let them work the flashlight and blow the whistle once, outside. Decide together where it lives. Kids remember what they helped set up.

What to add yourself. Any medication your child takes, and a small photo of your family with your phone numbers written on the back. If it's going in a school bag, check with the school first, since some have rules about what students can carry.

Like everything we sell, this kit sends one dollar to the National Forest Foundation.

Small enough to go with them. Simple enough to use.

Pro Tips

  • Keep one in your child's school backpack and one in your family emergency bin, at under 3 lbs. it's light enough to be in both places at once without anyone noticing
  • Let your child open it and look through the contents with you before an emergency ever happens. Familiarity with their kit means less fear and faster action when it counts
  • Add a small handwritten note from you inside the bag, something simple and reassuring. In a scary moment, a familiar voice on paper can make all the difference
  • The signal whistle is one of the most important items in the kit, make sure your child knows exactly when and how to use it before they ever need to
  • Pairs perfectly with the Junior ReadyPack for older siblings, or add it to your Guardian Go Bag setup so every member of the family has their own supplies within the larger family plan
  • Check the food and water annually. We recommend doing this every September during National Preparedness Month, right alongside your smoke detector batteries

Size & Storage

At just 9" x 8" x 2" and under 3 lbs., Mini Survival Mate fits in a school backpack, desk drawer, glove box, or family emergency bin. It barely takes up any space at all.

Good to Know...

Children make up about 25% of the U.S. population and face unique vulnerabilities during emergencies, yet most disaster planning focuses almost entirely on adults. Most family kits aren't sized, stocked, or designed with young children in mind. In a fast-moving situation, handing a small child supplies they can't carry or use on their own adds stress rather than reducing it.

So here's the question worth asking: if you and your child got separated during an emergency, or if you needed your hands free to handle a crisis, does your child have what they need to feel safe on their own for even a short time?

FEMA's own research shows that children who are prepared experience less anxiety and feel more confident during actual emergencies. That confidence starts with something as simple as having their own kit, something that's theirs, that they recognize, and that tells them someone thought ahead and took care of them. The Mini Survival Mate was designed to be exactly that for younger children.
