What Happens to Rechargeable Hearing Aids in a Power Outage?

It is the second evening without power. The cooler is holding, the flashlights are fine, and everyone has stopped worrying about dinner. Then your mother takes her hearing aids out, looks at the charging dock on the dresser, and the room goes quiet in a way that has nothing to do with the storm.

Quick answer Most rechargeable hearing aids run about a day on a full charge, and the charging case usually holds two or three more charges. That gives you roughly three days if the case started full. After that you need a power bank, and it needs to be one you tested before the outage.

Rechargeable hearing aids are a genuine improvement over fiddling with tiny batteries every few days. The trade is that they turn a hearing device into something that depends on the grid, and most people never think about that until the grid is the thing that stopped.

How long is the power actually out?

Long enough to matter.

11 hours is what the average electricity customer went without power in 2024, nearly double the annual average of the decade before. Major storms accounted for most of those hours. U.S. Energy Information Administration

Averages hide the tail, though, and the tail is what a hearing aid cares about. When Hurricane Ian hit Florida in 2022, the EIA notes that more than 2.6 million customers lost power and some were out for over two weeks.

Three days of charge is plenty for a Tuesday afternoon outage. It is not plenty for the other kind.

How long will rechargeable hearing aids last without power?

Check your own model rather than trusting a general number, because streaming audio and Bluetooth use change it significantly. But the shape is usually the same:

  • A full charge lasts roughly one day of wear
  • The charging case holds two or three additional full charges
  • The case itself needs wall power to refill

That last line is the one people miss. The case is not a battery reserve you can keep topping up. It is a fixed number of charges, and once it is empty it is a plastic box.

So the honest answer depends entirely on how full the case was when the lights went out. Which suggests a small habit worth building: charge the case, not just the aids.

Can I charge hearing aids from a power bank?

Usually yes, and this is the single best thing you can do about the problem. Most charging cases take standard USB, so a power bank turns three days into considerably more.

Three things to check before you rely on it:

  • The cable. Older cases use micro-USB, newer ones use USB-C. Keep the right one in the kit, not the one you assume you have.
  • The power bank holds its charge. A bank that has been in a drawer since last spring may be flat. Check it when you check the kit, twice a year.
  • It actually works with your case. Some low-output banks shut themselves off when a small device draws too little current.
Try tonight

Take the power bank out of the drawer, plug the charging case into it, and watch for the charging light. Two minutes, and it answers the only question that matters here. If the bank is flat or the cable is the wrong one, better to learn that in a lit kitchen.

Both Ready.gov, FEMA's preparedness campaign, and the CDC list portable chargers and spare batteries for adaptive equipment as standard kit items. This is not an unusual thing to plan for. It is on the official lists, and most people still skip it.

If your hearing aids take disposable batteries

You have the easier problem, and one worth appreciating. Disposable batteries do not care about the grid at all.

The planning is simply keeping enough of them somewhere you will find them in the dark. Store them in the kit rather than the bathroom drawer, keep the tabs on until you need them, and replace the supply on the same schedule you check everything else.

Worth knowing if you are shopping: this is a real argument for keeping one older pair of battery-powered aids as a backup rather than trading them in.

What belongs in the kit

  • A power bank, charged, with the correct cable for your charging case
  • Spare disposable batteries if any of your devices use them
  • A backup pair of hearing aids if you have older ones
  • A car charger, since a car is a large battery that most people forget they own
  • A written note of your device model and your audiologist's number

The car is the underrated one. If the outage runs long, a fifteen minute drive charges a power bank and a phone at the same time.

If you are doing this for a parent

The gap here is usually not equipment. It is that the person who would notice the case running low is three states away.

Put the power bank and cable in the same box as everything else, and label it. One box in one place matters more for hearing devices than for almost anything else in a kit, because searching for a cable in a dark house is exactly the task that gets harder when you cannot hear someone telling you where it is.
